French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Noël Barrot on Tuesday warned that France and the European Union could deploy a so-called “trade bazooka” against the United States if President Donald Trump moves ahead with plans to impose tariffs linked to Greenland.
Speaking to reporters, Barrot said the EU has powerful trade defense instruments at its disposal and would not hesitate to respond forcefully if Washington introduces new duties targeting European interests over the Greenland issue. His comments underscore rising tensions between the United States and Europe over trade policy and strategic disputes in the Arctic region.
The warning comes as President Trump has signaled that tariffs could be used as leverage in negotiations involving Greenland, a territory that has gained growing geopolitical importance due to security concerns, natural resources, and Arctic shipping routes.
European officials say any unilateral tariff action by the United States would be met with a coordinated response from Brussels, raising the risk of a broader transatlantic trade conflict. The European Commission has previously warned that retaliatory measures could be swift and proportionate.
